Toni Morrison was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio in 1931. She attained a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, and a master’s degree from Cornell University. She worked as Random House’s first black female editor while continuing to write and went on to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. After her death in 2019, she was posthumously inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in December of 2020.
