3 AI Apps

The information below was updated on July 3, 2023. I will update this information monthly.

Open AI ChatGPT 3.5 (free version)

From Open AI: We’ve trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests. ChatGPT 4 is available by subscription only ($20 per month).

Claude AI (beta)

The Claude chatbot from Anthropic is designed with safety in mind. According to Anthropic’s website, “Constitutional training is a process for training a model to adhere to a “constitution” of desired behavior. The core Anthropic model has been finetuned with constitutional training with the goal of becoming helpful, honest, and harmless. You can learn more about constitutional training here.” The current beta model is free to users.

ClioVis

This app was developed through the University of Texas to provide students with a way to create mind maps, timelines, and presentations for projects. It can easily be adapted for use in writing assignments. Have students create a timeline of their work and explain the connections between each stage of the writing process. The tool has a bare-bones free version and also has a more robust subscription model.

Khanmigo Education AI (beta)

Khanmigo for teachers offers a lot of exciting features such as standards-aligned lesson planning tied to Khan Academy’s world-class content library; an on-demand summary of recent student work to quickly assess progress and identify areas where additional support is needed; and Khanmigo-crafted learning objectives, rubrics, and even exit tickets.

Not currently available to students; requires monthly donation ($9 per month or $99 per year). For updates, subscribe to the free Khan Labs newsletter.

Adobe Firefly (beta)

The vision for Adobe Firefly is to help people expand upon their natural creativity. As an embedded model inside Adobe products, Firefly will offer generative AI tools made specifically for creative needs, use cases, and workflows. Through efforts like the Content Authenticity Initiative and Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, we’re standing up for accountability, responsibility, and transparency in generative AI. We’re working toward a universal “Do Not Train” Content Credentials tag that will remain associated with a piece of content wherever it’s used, published, or stored.

Google Docs “Help Me Write” Assistant (beta)

On Google Docs, you can use the “Help me write (Labs)” prompt to suggest text using artificial intelligence. You can use the prompt to:

  • Write new text. For example, you can ask Google Docs to draft a letter or a social media caption.
  • Rewrite existing text. For example, you can rephrase text, or you can make it more formal, more concise, or more detailed.

This feature is currently available on desktop.

Otter AI Transcription

Otter provides faculty and students with real-time captions and notes for in-person and virtual lectures, classes or meetings. A basic account is free; more advanced features are available for a monthly subscription fee ($8.33 per month).

Grammarly

Here’s Grammarly’s description of student services: “Discover what you’re capable of with Grammarly’s AI writing assistance for any task from start to finish, including brainstorming, revision, and citations.” Many if not all high school students have been advised to use Grammarly to assist in checking their papers for grammar, spelling, and syntax errors. All English Language Learners at the College of Western Idaho use this tool. Grammarly is now providing more “robust” assistance in generating writing for assignments. The base app is free, with premium subscriptions.

Paperly

“Paperly is specially designed for researchers, offering you the most effective way to read, review and think.” The tool is designed to help researchers manage articles they read. Features include citation generation, note taking, and mind-mapping. Users drag pdf formatted text into Paperly to use the app’s tools. The free version limits document imports to 10. A license costs $33.15 (not a subscription-one time license fee).
